Whether through death or spiritual decline, David is aware of the paucity of godly men in the land. There had developed an environment of dishonesty, deceit and untrustworthy communication. He could not trust what people said. Indeed, the context speaks of vain words, flattering words, proud words, and vile words – but in contrast, God’s Word remained pure (v. 6). From Alpha to Omega and from Genesis to Revelation, they are tried words. They have a purity that has been tested over and over again, and yet found to be without spot or any such thing. It is the inerrant, infallible, eternal word, which is but the oral expression of the Word Himself. It is our impurity that causes confusion of doctrine and misunderstanding, not the divine truth.
