Last Words

Who has not said at one time or another because of a misunderstanding or confusion, “Well, the last thing you told me was….” We remember particularly the last thing that was said. In the British forces, it was the policy that if anyone separated from the main force, then they were to follow standing orders, i.e. the last commands that were given to them.

A friend, who is a communications lecturer, told me, that the mind remembers the last information it receives. I have read that people play tapes whilst in bed, so that as they begin to drowse then the information is recorded in their minds before they fall asleep.

We are told in 2 Samuel 23:1-5, “These are the last words of David,” memorable words that deserve thorough investigation and study. But the last words spoken by the lips of our Lord are to be especially heeded by His church—

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Mt 28:19).

We are then, to observe the last thing that He said, and to obey His command, and to take His teaching to all nations. We must never forget the great commission to evangelise, in the knowledge that He and His power are with us.
