In the church building where we worship, as I would stand in the pulpit, on the opposite wall there is a text of Scripture. The congregation sit with their backs to it, but it faces whoever is preaching. It reads, “Sirs, we would see Jesus.” (John 12:21).

It is put there to remind the preacher that Christ is to be the subject of his ministry. That as the sun is the centre of our solar system, and we revolve around it; and from it we receive the necessary benefits of light and warmth; so Christ is central to the Gospel. He is the centre and soul of every sphere, and should be of every sermon.

Notice how Paul to the Hebrew Christians, uplifts the Lord Jesus, and points the readers to Him. “Consider (to observe fully or to behold), the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.” (Hebrews 3:1). So also we have in (Hebrews 3:2), “Looking (consider attentively), unto Jesus.” And then in v.3 “For consider (contemplate) Him that endured the contradiction of sinners.” So whether preacher or readers, our eye of faith should be filled with Christ’s glorious person and work. Heed His voice through the prophet Isaiah 45:22, “Look unto me and be saved all the ends of the earth.” Ω
