Foxe’s Book of Martyrs was the most famous book after the Bible. Indeed all the churches in the UK possessed three books, The Bible, The Book of Common Prayer and Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. Fox assiduously collected information from many sources, which in his retreat in Basel, Switzerland he received from all quarters of the UK and the continent. 

He was very fastidious in checking the anecdotal evidence. Some of the evidences were criticised and challenged. He undertook to correct these in the four reprints of his book. The second reprint was the largest of the production. It ran to three million words, and was three times bigger than the Bible in content. It describes in detail, and with wood carving prints, the excruciating sufferings of the Protestant martyrs. 

What size the book could be written today with the persecution and killing of thousands of Christians across the world! Oh friends, heed the injunction and command of the Holy Scripture, Hebrews 13:3, “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them.”
