Scientists are continuing to make all sorts of discoveries. But the more they make, the more mysteries are multiplied. Recently, a news item informed me that experiments have taken place on flat worms. Often when you are gardening you may slice through worms, and one’s conscience isn’t bothered, because they actually repair themselves. There are different classes of flat worms: some live in water, others in leaf mould, and others in the intestines of animals and humans.

During investigations of this creature, scientists have isolated the gene that enables the flat worm to regenerate itself. Obviously, the researchers have in view its application to humans, so that if a body part is lost, then possibly the body could regenerate its missing member.

Whether that will materialise or not in the future is anybody’s guess, and is probably far-fetched. But there is one part that could not be regenerated in a person by that gene, and that is the soul. It needs the exceeding, mighty power of God to renew, regenerate and enliven the soul of a sinner. Regeneration is the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit, so that the soul is made alive to God. Paul records, “according to his mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
